Junior Academy: Naturalist Know-how

Make a sustainable field notebook!

Kids 8-11, with accompanying adult, can attend our Junior Academy: Naturalist Know-how workshop and make a sustainable field notebook to use in the workshop and to take home for recording your notes and drawings!

Best of all, in the Junior Academy: Naturalist Know-how workshop you’ll learn naturalist skills!  Every month we have a new theme. See below for the list.

Sundays at 2pm – 2:45pm (sign-up at 1:30pm) Naturalist Center / Lab (Level 3 across from the Planetarium exit)

This program is designed for youth ages 8 to 11. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 20 youth with attending adults. Onsite registration is required for this program (1:30 PM).  Free with Academy admission.

Each month a new nature skill will be presented. Variations of the monthly skill will be available each week. This is a 45-minute program.

January’s skill is Puzzling Out the Past Learn what archaeologists and paleontologists do on a dig.

February’s skill is Calls of the Wild What animal makes that sound? 

March’s skill is Observing Changes Watching nature transform.

April’s skill is Soil Sleuthing Learn dirt science and take home a seed-growing experiment.

May’s skill is Naturalists In the Field  Step out and see nature like a scientist.

June’s skill is Skull Stories — What can skulls tell us about an animal’s ancestor?

July’s skill is  Observation Basics II — Learn how to sketch and record like a scientist!

August’s skill is  Skeletons on the Outside — No bones about it, learn about these cool animals!

September’s skill is Eclipses on the HorizonBe prepared for two October eclipses!

October’s skill is Focus in the FieldLearn how scientists use photographs to study nature.

November’s skill is Nature AdaptsDiscover how turkeys and other animals adapt to their environments.

Please note: There will be no Naturalist Know-how classes on Quarterly Free Sundays, June 1, 2014 and September 14, 2014, others TBA.
