Can you guess what it is?
Here are some hints:
- This animal usually eats 3% to 6% of its total body weight per day.
- It has very good hearing since it is able to hear sounds up to a mile away.
Leave us a comment with your answer! Then come see us outside the Project Lab on Friday, December 30th at 11:30 AM for Specimen Spotlight in order to find out if you’re right and to learn more about this animal.

Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) tooth. Or perhaps a smaller toothed whale. I will take this fine specimen as my prize, as long as it wasn’t obtained in violation of CITES. Or a job! ; )

Thanks again for all of your thoughtful guesses! Unfortunately, we cannot give out the specimen as a prize to the one who got it right, but you can come see it in the Naturalist Center. As for a job, you can apply for any of our open positions by going to the following: Careers.
As for the correct guess, this week’s specimen is a tusk from a walrus (Odobenus rosmarus). To learn more about walruses and see pictures and videos of them, check out the following websites:
