The Academy's curators are world experts in evolution, systematics, biogeography, ecology, and organismal biology. They lead research expeditions around the globe, oversee eight scientific departments, and act as stewards for the Academy's collection of 20 million specimens.

The Academy is governed by a distinguished group of scientists who have been appointed Fellows of the California Academy of Sciences. This honor recognizes their notable contributions to one or more of the natural sciences. Fellows are nominated by their colleagues and appointed by the Board of Trustees. They remain members of the Fellowship for life.

Interns |
The Academy sponsors a year-round, high-school internship program called Careers in Science. Youths from communities traditionally underrepresented in the sciences are strongly urged to apply. Interns undergo extensive training and fulfill projects in education, research, and administration.

Docents |
These guides are highly trained volunteers who play a vital role in the visitor experience. In the Academy's history, docents have ranged in age from 22 to 94. They channel their passion for lifelong learning and teaching into leading tours, organizing specimen carts, and assisting with public programs.
