In April 2015, more than 40 scientists and scientific divers from the California Academy of Sciences headed for the Philippines’ Verde Island Passage—waters so rich with life that they’re known as “the center of the center of marine biodiversity.” In the month that followed, Academy researchers discovered dozens of new species, dove into never-before-seen environments 450 feet below the surface, collected animals for exhibit and study, and added to our scientific understanding of Earth’s incredible, coral-reef ecosystems.

Meet the scientists and divers, hear about their discoveries, and see the specimens and live animals collected on expedition! Hosted by +ScientificAmerican editor Curtis Brainard, it’s sure to be an unforgettable look at how modern field science seeks to catalog and protect Earth’s astounding biodiversity
