New Academy Update
Rainforests of the World domeThe first inhabitants of the new Academy will soon move in - corals and rainforest trees. This month, the 212,000-gallon Philippine Coral Reef tank will be filled with saltwater for the first time, in preparation to receive the first of over 1,500 live coral colonies. Also this month, five trees currently growing in Florida will be shipped to San Francisco in a climate-controlled truck, and then lifted into the four-story rainforest dome. Once inside, the trees will bask in 75% humidity and a constant temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Click here to learn more about the new Academy.

SCIENCE BRIEFS

Perspectives on Bay Area Oil Spill
Read scientist perspectives on the oil spillOn Nov. 7, approximately 58,000 gallons of oil spilled from a container ship called the Cosco Busan into San Francisco Bay, spreading to beaches surrounding the bay and out into the Pacific Ocean. The spill posed a serious threat to the numerous birds, mammals, fish, invertebrates, and other organisms that depend on the bay for food and shelter. "For the bird populations, this spill could not have occurred at a worse time," says Dr. Jack Dumbacher, Chair of Ornithology & Mammalogy at the Academy. The Orion Nebula: Where Stars Are Born
Visit the Dean Lectures pageOn Tuesday, December 18, join Dr. Robert O'Dell of Vanderbilt University for a lecture on the famous Orion Nebula. Recent observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based infrared telescopes have revealed that star formation in this nebula has extended to within the last 100,000 years - relatively recent compared with the age of the universe. This talk will feature Hubble images made by the speaker and a simulated flying tour through the nebula. 7:30 pm; $4 admission; takes place at the Jewish Community Center, 3200 California Street, San Francisco. Click here for details.
