Throughout the month of October check out some of the scariest specimens in the Academy’s research collections. Hand-picked by the museums scientists, these specimens will be on display near the project lab and include such chill-inducing species as the Death’s head hawkmoth-the skull-patterned moth featured in Silence of the Lambs and things that scare us for reasons you might not expect.

In honor of Halloween, face your fears and join the Academy’s naturalists for lessons about creepy-crawly critters, including snakes, spiders and surprises. A special scavenger hunt will help visitors track down some of the creepiest critters in the building.

• Pick up a scavenger hunt in the lobby, Naturalist Center, Early Exlorers Cove or print here and bring it when you visit.
• Creep and crawl your way to find at least six critters and earn one of three special buttons from our Naturalist Center.

Daily Programs

Daily programs for the month will allow you to meet and sometimes touch some traditionally frightening animals in the floor.

• Docent carts will feature topics like skulls, spiders, bats and snakes.
• Swamp and Lagoon interpretive talks will feature creepy crawly highlights.
• Special live animal programs on for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.

Saturday, October 31

• Visit the Academy and celebrate Halloween with face painters, stilt walkers and special prizes for kids in costumes.
• Special live animal program with centipedes, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes and more. Located in the Forum at 1:30 pm.

Sunday, November 1

• Special skeleton family craft for Dia de los Muertos. Located in the classroom from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm.
