The California Academy of Sciences leads a city-wide celebration for the father of evolution, Charles Darwin. It’s the 200th anniversary of his birth and the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species.

About Evolve 2009
|
150 years have passed since Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution by natural selection, but many American adults still don’t accept or understand this basic tenet of modern science. In a 2008 Harris Interactive survey commissioned by the California Academy of Sciences, only 62% of adults think that evolution is currently occurring. To tackle this gap in scientific literacy, the Academy is leading a San Francisco-wide celebration of evolution this spring, beginning with a kick-off party on February 12, 2009 – the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. It is the largest Darwin celebration in the country and is specifically designed to boost public understanding about evolutionary theory and its application in modern science. |

Interested in learning more about evolution? The Academy is devoted to systematics, the study of collections. Its scientists use organisms' physiology, anatomy and biochemistry to discover the evolutionary relationships between species. When the lights go down, fun begins. Every Thursday, the Academy opens its doors to adults from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Attendees can explore the museum and enjoy world-class music, talks, and activities. Food and cocktails are available for purchase.
Fact Vs. Theory? |
Is evolution a mere conjecture? Academy scientist, Dr. John McCosker says "It's a theory like gravity, and I wouldn't jump out a window to test gravity." Evolution is extremely, well-documented by fossil and DNA evidence.
