Jens Lekman

8:30pm East Garden

"Jens Lekman, born and reared in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a songwriter, adventurer and retired bingo hall employee. Traveling our globe as a wide open receptor of all it has to offer, Lekman repurposes for his own oeuvre the world’s great, lost pop hooks of past and present. He breathes into them his droll senses of humor, romance and melody and gives them a newfound buoyancy. Since his 2004 trifecta of EPs (Maples Leaves, Rocky Dennis in Heaven, You Are the Light) and right on through his acclaimed 2007 full-length, Night Falls Over Kortedala, Lekman has made hopeless romantics of us all. In a musical language that has roots in the work of Arthur Russell, The Magnetic Fields, Calvin Johnson and Modern Lovers, Lekman’s songs serve as a reminder to look closer at the world around us, to appreciate the beauty when it’s both in and out of context; at its most heartbreaking, its most loving, and its most absurd."

Geoffrey O'Connor

7:15pm East Garden

Geoffrey O’Connor, frontman for Australian euphoric pop sprites Crayon Fields, is stepping out from behind his previous solo moniker Sly Hats to stand exposed to the world as a solo artist under his own name.

Since returning to Australia and dropping the Sly Hats moniker, Geoffrey has played solo shows with the likes of School Of Seven Bells and First Aid Kit. His first album as Geoffrey O’Connor, entitled Vanity Is Forever, is both more elaborate and more personal than anything he has done previously. Another stylistic shift, the album moves between seductive high-production dance hits, suave funk joyrides and modern synthetic power balladry.

Miles the DJ

6-10pm Coral Reef

Miles Anzaldo is an on-air DJ on LIVE105 radio here in San Francisco, as well as being popular at club nights and events throughout the Bay Area.  Besides being a resident at perennial local favorite Popscene, he has spun tunes with such popular bands as The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Cut Copy, and The Presets, and guested at such local clubs as PopRoxx, Gossip, Temptation, and Barracuda @ 111 Minna. Expect to hear a variety of genres; Miles song selection boasts a unique mix of Soul, Indie Rock , Electro, 80s music, and beyond.  NightLife is thrilled to have him bring his song-drive style to the Academy.

Microsoft Innovation - Kinect, Mobile & World Wide Telescope

6:30-9pm African Hall

Jon Britton and Tosh Chiang, from the Audio-Visual & Electrical Engineering department at the Academy will be on hand showing guests how to drive through the Universe using World Wide Telescope and how body movement and gestures can operate a robot through the catalyst of Kinect.

Many thanks to Microsoft for sponsoring this night's event!
