African Hall
Built in the 1930s, these classic dioramas depict real places with recognizable landmarks. Look closely, and you will see not only fine workmanship but also small and subtle surprises by Academy scientists.

African Hall Scenes
African Hall Main | Black Lechwe | Hunter's Hartebeest | Lions | Mountain Nyala | Oryx | Roan Antelope | Sable Antelope | Waterbuck | Watering Hole | Zebra

These dioramas reflect the priorities and sensibilities of an earlier age when many African animals were sought as trophies and not perceived as inherently valuable living resources. Many of the animals in these dioramas are now increasingly rare due to persistent human activities such as habitat disturbance and poaching.
