Natural History of the African Continent

This presentation is designed to introduce teachers and students to the natural history of the African continent. We begin with a look at the climates of Africa and how they influence patterns of vegetation. Descriptions of African plant communities and the kinds of animals they support lead into a general introduction to the characteristics and classifications of mammals. We will then examine the animals of Africa and their adaptations to their environment and to each other. We conclude this study with a look at the way humans have played a part, in both the past and the present, in determining species composition and population levels; we will also take a look into the future and into the Natural History Museum's role in preserving and conserving African plants and animals.
