Exhibit Activities for Students
1) How do venomous animals inject their venom? Six methods of delivery are described in the exhibit. Ask students to list the six methods of venom delivery and to list one animal from the exhibit that uses that method of venom delivery. Ask students to consider if each animal they have chosen uses venom for defense or predation or both.
Six described methods of delivery are fangs, harpoons, spines, stingers, teeth and spurs
2) Develop a report on one venomous animal.
Ask each student to choose one animal about which to develop a report. Gather as much information about it as you can. How does it deliver venom? Where does it live? Is its venom deadly to humans? Draw a picture of the animal, noting size, coloration, behavior. Be sure to write down both the common name and the scientific name. Note any indicators of habitat in the exhibit such as sand or rocks. What does this tell you about where the animal lives?
OR
Assign each student an animal about which to collect information. (See the list of live animals.) Draw a picture of the animal. How big is it? Where does it live? How does it deliver venom?
3) (An orientation activity for the younger students) Give students five minutes to explore the exhibit with the following directions: Find one animal and look closely at it, read the information about it and report back to your group two things about the animal that interest you. Remember the name of the animal. For the youngest children, this activity might give them a sense of the scope of the exhibit as they listen to the reports of their fellow students.
