COUNTDOWN TO DOWNTOWN
The California Academy of Sciences Celebrates its Migration to 875 Howard
St.
The Academy will close its Golden Gate Park facility December 31, and
open at 875 Howard Street Spring 2004
(SAN FRANCISCO) Monday, November 10, 2003 -- The California Academy of
Sciences is celebrating its last month in Golden Gate Park before it moves
downtown to 875 Howard Street then returns to the park in 2008. Guests
are invited to witness the evolution of this historic institution by visiting
the plans and models for the new Academy on display in Hofeld Hall, and
enjoying programs, lectures, and events taking place throughout the month.
Every Sunday in December assistants will take visitors' photos in "Parting
Pictures" at specially designated photo zones, including the African
Watering Hole and the Swamp. Taking these shots got you feeling shutter
happy? Younger visitors are invited to make sun prints in the courtyard.
Pressed leaves and flowers, and shells will be on hand for compositions.
Now is the perfect time for visitors to catch exhibits closing December
31st; Visit Skulls, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life
and Land, and 150 Years of Science, the Academy's anniversary exhibit.
Morrison Planetarium will offer the classic Christmas Star show as well
as What's Up, Stars over San Francisco, and the Sky tonight each weekend;
See the following schedule for times. To encourage all to attend, the
Academy will be open free to the public on the last three days of the
year, December 29, 30, and 31. During "Three for Free" the Academy
will open extended hours from 9 am to 9 pm.
The Academy will return to Golden Gate Park in 2008. In the interim the
Academy will migrate downtown and will be open to the public with Steinhart
Aquarium, changing natural history exhibits, courses, and programs at
875 Howard Street opening this coming Spring 2004.

Three for FREE
The Academy is free and open to the public the last three days of the
year. Open extended hours, 9 am to 9 pm, the the public is invited to
take the opportunity to visit the Academy in Golden Gate Park before the
Academy migrates downtown to 875 Howard Street, and then returns to the
park in 2008. 875 Howard Street will open to the public in Spring 2004.

Parting Pictures
Academy visitors are invited to take farewell photos of the Academy as
preparations for moving begin. Special photography zones by the African
Watering Hole and the Swamp will be available. Each spot will have an
assistant available to take photos of you and your family. Bring your
camera and your smile.

Morrison Planetarium Star Shows
What's Up
In this show for families, explore the sky and some of its wonders: the
Sun, the Moon, the stars, and the planets! Identify constellations and
the "Man in the Moon." See satellites, and have fun under the
stars with everyone's favorite cosmic cartoon critter, Moon Mouse!
Each Saturday and Sunday in December at Noon.
Stars Over San Francisco
Celebrate 50 years under the stars of Morrison Planetarium and find out
how the Planetarium and our knowledge of the Universe itself have changed
since the planetarium opened on November 8, 1952.
Each Saturday and Sunday in December at 1 pm.
Christmas Star
View the annual holiday sky when the wintertime sky is on the dome. This
show also offers explanations of what the fabled star of Bethlehem may
have been.
Each Saturday and Sunday in December at 2 pm and 3 pm.
The Sky Tonight
A relaxing tour of the current night sky, focusing on constellations,
visible planets, the phase of the Moon, and upcoming celestial events
visible with the naked eye. Our most free-form show, where the sky is
the main effect; style may vary from one lecturer to another.
Each Saturday and Sunday in December at 4 pm.
