Celebrates Latino Heritage Month With Three Special Events
Events taking place October 9, 11, and November 1, 2003
Colombia Under the Stars
Enjoy a concert with Tambores de Colombia
Tambores de Colombia is dedicated to presenting the traditional music
of Colombia's Atlantic Coast to the North American public. They're ambassadors
of culture eager to share the immense riches, the profound mythology and
the overwhelming joy of their artistic traditions.
With its contagious rhythms the music of Colombia's Caribbean Coast is
the result of an interesting fusion of the acoustic expressions of three
different people: The South American Indians contributed the melody with
its lyric poetry full of melancholy; the slaves brought from their African
homeland the syncopated beats and frenetic rhythms; the Spaniards, at
last, filled in with their happiness and the rich traditions of Europe.
Tambores de Colombia is a young group composed of professional musicians
of long standing careers, who have played in many important groups all
over the Bay Area. Under the direction of Ramiro Bernal they are joining
forces for the first time to bring you the musical swing of the beautiful
land of
Colombia.
Enjoy an evening of vibrant Colombian music as you look at the South
American sky in the Morrison Planetarium. Under the direction of Ramiro
Bernal, Tambores de Colombia plays music from Colombia's Caribbean coast,
a spicy mix of South American, Spanish and African rhythms.

Latino Heritage Day
Visit the Academy to celebrate Latino Heritage Month with ongoing live
demonstrations and hands-on activities including paper flowers, traditional
Zapotec weaving, crafts from Colombia, traditional dances from Chile,
as well as, tortilla and tamale-making stations.
Saturday, October 11, 11 am-4:30 pm;
FREE with museum admission.
Día de Muertos
Participate in the decoration of a traditional ofrenda, and celebrate
the Day of the Dead with a live pre-Columbian music performance by Ernesto
Hernández Olmos. Ernesto is an artist and musician who specializes
in making and playing pre-Columbian-style instruments, and explaining
the ancient Aztec tradition of El Día de Muertos.
