What's On At The California Academy of Sciences
Programs and Lectures
December 2003/January 2004
The California Academy of Sciences is celebrating its last month in Golden
Gate Park with programs, lectures and events. The Academy will be open
free to the public on the last three days of the year, December 29, 30,
and 31. Also, every Sunday in December we will assist visitors in taking
"Parting Pictures" at their favorite exhibit spot whether it
be the African Watering Hole or the Swamp. Now is the perfect time for
visitors to catch exhibits closing December 31. The Academy will return
to Golden Gate Park in 2008. In the interim the Academy will be open to
the public with Steinhart Aquarium, changing natural history exhibits,
programs, and courses at 875 Howard Street opening this coming Spring
2004.

Parting Pictures
Each Sunday in December
December 7, 14, 21, 28; 11am - 1pm
Visitors are invited to take farewell photos of the Academy before our
move at the end of the year. Each Sunday in December, special photography
zones by the African Watering Hole and the Swamp will be available. Each
spot will have an assistant available to take photos of you and your family.
Bring your camera and your smile. Free.
Sun Prints
Each Sunday in December
December 7, 14, 21, 28; 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Younger visitors are invited to make sun prints in the Academy courtyard
each Sunday afternoon in December. Pressed leaves, flowers, shells, animal
transparencies and stencils will be available for compositions. Free.
Three for Free
December 29, 30, 31; 9 am - 9pm
The Academy is free and open to the public the last three days of the
year. In addition, Morrison Planetarium shows will be free. (Don't miss
these last shows in the Planetarium until 2008.) Open extended hours these
three days; all are invited to take this opportunity to visit the Academy
in Golden Gate Park before the Academy migrates downtown to 875 Howard
Street.
Winter Birding
Ages 8 and Up
Saturday, January 17; 9-11:30 am
Search for birds in Golden Gate Park, and learn about what to look for
or hear when identifying birds in the field. We'll look for Anna's hummingbirds,
downy woodpeckers, ruby-crowned kinglets, pygmy nuthatches, red-shouldered
hawks, and more. Wear warm clothing in layers, walking shoes, and bring
binoculars and water.

Winter's Wildlife Wonders

Discover the wonders of birds on this overnight at the Academy's Pepperwood
Preserve in Santa Rosa. Instructed by Academy curatorial assistant Moe
Flannery and Pepperwood property manager and naturalist Michael Gillogly.

Avian Toxicity in New Guinea
Dr. Jack Dumbacher
With wonderful photos and lively tales, ornithologist Dr. Jack Dumbacher
takes you on a field trip to Papua New Guinea, up the Purari River and
into his field camp where he studies poisonous birds. Dumbacher has studied
toxic birds for over 10 years at the University of Chicago and the Smithsonian,
and now joins the Academy as the new curator of birds and mammals. Come
learn about poisonous birds-what poisons they use, which birds use them,
and how they may be adaptive to the birds.
