The California Academy of Sciences
Throws the Yard Sale of the Year

Sunday, September 5 from 10 am - 5 pm in Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (August 26, 2004) - Over the course of its long history, the California Academy of Sciences has acquired over 18 million scientific specimens, as well as a vast assortment of collection gear, research equipment, furniture, and memorabilia. While the Academy's entire library of research specimens has now been moved to 875 Howard Street, not all of the other trinkets and treasures that have been amassed over past 150 years will fit into the new space. Those who would like to own a piece of Academy history, or simply get a great deal on office supplies, should mark their calendars for September 5, when the Academy will throw the yard sale of the year.

The sale, which will take place inside the Academy's old building in Golden Gate Park, will include office furniture, outdoor furniture, educational toys, vintage lab equipment, office supplies, pieces from past exhibits, hardware, doors, windows, plants, memorabilia, and even a life-sized paper maché alligator. Proceeds from the sale will help fund scientific research and education at the Academy. A special members' preview will take place from 8 am - 10 am, and the sale will be open to the public from 10 am - 5 pm. Visitors can access the sale from the back entrance to the Academy's old building on Middle Drive.

The California Academy of Sciences, including Steinhart Aquarium and the Natural History Museum, is open to the public at 875 Howard Street, Admission to the Academy at 875 Howard Street is: $7 for adults, $4.50 for youth ages 12 to 17, Seniors ages 65+ and students with valid ID, $2 for children ages four to 11 and children ages three and younger will be admitted free of charge. The California Academy of Sciences, the fourth largest natural history museum in the United States, is home to Steinhart Aquarium, Morrison Planetarium and the Natural History Museum. The Academy is beginning an extensive rebuilding project in Golden Gate Park. Pritzker prize-winning architect Renzo Piano is designing the new Academy, which is expected to open in 2008.
