Education

children at the Academy

Our dedicated team of educators delivers a wide variety of formal education programs, including the Teacher Institute on Science and Sustainability, the Careers in Science intern program, the BioForum continuing education series, and a number of other teacher and student services. From programs with California school kids to thought-provoking lectures, the Academy promotes science awareness and lifelong learning for children of all ages.

Research

Jack Dumbacher

Your gift ensures that Academy scientists around the world can continue to seek out new species and pioneer new perspectives beyond the planet. Research at the California Academy of Sciences aims to discover new knowledge about life’s diversity. There is a new urgency to gaining knowledge of the natural world, as awareness grows that organisms and species are key components of the ecosystems which provide our food, water, shelter and energy. The generosity of our donors brings our mission to life – for that, the Academy is deeply grateful.

Animal Care

Claude

From the giant turtles, venomous snakes, and our albino alligator named Claude, all the animals at the Academy require special care. The aquatic biologists of the Steinhart Aquarium are responsible for the health, feeding, reproduction, safety, and comfort of more than 38,000 live animals.

Legacy Giving

Eastwood Associates are people of vision. By thinking ahead to the future, they enable the Academy to explore, explain, and protect the natural world for generations to come.

Ron and Sandy Linder

Eastwood Associate, Academy Docent & Former Trustee

“The Academy’s research is important to our lives and to the world, and docents help visitors make that connection. And being in the world’s largest Platinum ‘green’ public building inspires conversations about how we can live with less environmental impact.”

George Montgomery

George G. Montgomery, Jr.
Former Trustee and the Academy’s Planned Giving Chair

“Planned gifts—future gifts from an estate—are enormously important to the Academy’s work. Because I care about the Academy, I’m helping to ensure its future with a bequest.”

Kitty Wallin

Kitty Wallin
Academy docent and Eastwood Associate

“I became a volunteer and an Eastwood Associate because I believe in giving back. And the Academy has given me so much. My small gift will allow tomorrow’s visitors to discover science here as I have.”

Michael Bennett

Michael Bennett
Eastwood Associate

“People say that viewing the stars can light the spark of wonder and curiosity. More often, that spark jumps from person to person — and the Academy is great at catalyzing that exchange.”

Connie Spanier

Connie Spanier
Eastwood Associate and Academy volunteer

“I’ve had a passion for the ocean all my life, so naturally I was drawn to the aquarium and became an Academy volunteer. As an Eastwood, I’m keeping the Academy’s mission alive: to explore, explain, and protect the natural world.”

Eastwood Associates

Alice Eastwood

The Eastwood Associates are a community of philanthropists whose planned gifts will endow the Academy and sustain its important mission in the future. Membership is a lifetime privilege and Eastwood Associates are honored at special gatherings each year. This distinguished group was named after Alice Eastwood, the Academy’s celebrated curator of botany from 1894 to 1949. When she died in 1953, at the age of 94, she left the Academy her extensive collection of botanical publications, which scientists and students continue to use.

They fund chairs and fellowships that advance important biodiversity research around the globe. They support eye-opening exhibits and innovative educational programs that cultivate science literacy and train future scientists. Most important, planned gifts are a lasting tribute to their donors, honoring a lifelong commitment to science, discovery, and sharing the natural world with others.

Lauren Hall

Friend of the Academy and Friends Steering Committee member

“I have always been fascinated by infectious disease: everything from prions and viruses to protozoans and worms. Everyone in my family is mad for science, and we always take friends and family to the Academy when they visit. Whether it's Steinhart Aquarium, a Planetarium show, or a lecture on stem cells, there's something to interest everyone. We support the Academy knowing that our gift supports scientific research, exploration and education”

“The Academy has been a wonderful resource for my family when we're looking to do something that is fun, inspiring, and expands the way we see our world. There's no better way to learn than by doing, and our whole family has loved things like shaking in an earthquake, seeing an alligator up close, or powering a light bulb from a piece of fruit. The warm and friendly staff engage our kids so that they learn without realizing they are being taught”

“At age 11 I had my first BIG encounter with the wildness of the ocean. I was moved deeply by the intensity of its unique ecosystem rich in diversity of sea life and its complex underworld. It left me wanting to make sure that we never let such dynamic ecosystems be put in jeopardy. The diversity and wildness of life is truly captivating to me and I hope to protect as much of what is left for my children and future generations.”

“The Academy presents long-term value by increasing our investment in science and education and helping form the sort of world we want our children to grow up in. We need to make sure our children have the skills they need to solve problems, and the biggest thing is to educate children about science. We take every opportunity to talk about the Academy with friends and family —I feel good being associated with such a wonderful place and doing my part to promote it.”
