Benefits Overview

The California Academy of Sciences recognizes the tremendous value of our dedicated staff, and offers a comprehensive benefits program to support and reward employees.

For full-time, salaried employees (30-40hrs/week) CAS offers the following benefits:

  • MEDICAL: The Academy pays the majority of a full-time employee’s medical coverage and also contributes a significant portion to cover dependents through Kaiser and Anthem Blue Cross HMO plans. We also contribute toward the Anthem Blue Cross PPO / HSA plan but at a higher premium cost to the employee. The Academy pays 50% of the HMO premium for part-time employees.
  • DENTAL: CAS pays 100% of the employee's coverage and 30% of dependent coverage using Delta Dental DMO and DPO plans.
  • VISION: CAS offers low-cost, pretax voluntary vision coverage through VSP which is paid entirely by the employee.
  • LIFE INSURANCE: The Academy provides Life/AD&D insurance through Reliance Standard Life Insurance Company. Every full time employee is covered up to 1.5 times their annual salary at no cost to the employee.
  • LONG TERM DISABILITY: The Academy offers this employer paid benefit through Reliance Standard Life Insurance.
  • RETIREMENT (403B): Through TIAA/CREF employees may participate in a Supplemental Retirement program within the first month of work. After one year of employment the Academy offers a Group Retirement matching plan.
  • EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: The Academy provides this confidential consultation service to assist its employees through the stresses of everyday life and work.
  • FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS: CAS offers both medical and dependent flexible spending accounts, which allow employee contributions of up to $5000 per plan through our payroll company ADP.
  • COMMUTER PROGRAM: Academy employees may purchase Bay Area transit passes for commuting to work using pre-tax dollars. The Academy also offers a subsidy to reward those who get to work by public transportation, carpool, bicycle or walking.

Part time employees (20 - 29 hrs/week) are eligible for the benefits above, with the exception of dental and life insurance/long term disability. For the medical plans, part time employees and the Academy share the cost at 50%.
