thanks for your comments, Richard. We have been working for some time on ideas for an educational effort in Sao Tome and Principe, and in fact we spent considerable time talking with folks on the islands during GG IV. I suggest you email Roberta Ayres who was our sci ed specialist on this trip and is helping me put together a proposal. Email me at rdrewes@calacademy.org, and I will give you her address. Another point is that although we have concentrated on the oceanic islands, the first multidisciplinary expedition I led was to Bioko in 1998 (I first visited it in the 1980's). Your artificial reef idea is interesting but really needs discussion, especially if you are considering the islands south of Bioko. I prefer email but my number in San Francisco is 415 379-5286.

What a wonderful set of photos and descriptions. I am so happy to see that you have carried forward on your research all these years. I am a coastal environmental educator with the Gulf of Mexico Foundation and oversee the Science & Spanish Club Network, a multicultural and ecosystem-based approach to coastal environmental education. I am in the process of formulating a presentation on environmental education for a delegation from Equatorial Guinea who will be in Texas on June 14-17, 2010. I have been online for days trying to assess the realities of strategies for such an undertaking as my point of reference will be the proposed creation of an artificial reef somewhere in the Gulf of Guinea. My question to Dr. Drewes and his staff is "how are you sharing your findings with the local island and mainland populations?" My cell is 361-779-7351 and welcome a dialogue with anyone who has an interest in formal, nonformal and informal science education.
