CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES LAUNCHES
CHILDREN'S PHOTO CONTEST ON APRIL 15, 2008
"Through the Lens: California in your backyard"
SAN FRANCISCO (March 21, 2008) — The California Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce the launch of a photo contest for youth ages 8-12. The objective: to capture the theme of "California in your backyard" on film and support the Academy's mission to explore, explain and protect the natural world. Starting on April 15th, contest details and submission instructions can be found online at the contest page.
Academy researchers have been observing and documenting the natural world for more than 155 years. This contest provides an opportunity for children to put on the hat of a researcher, study their surroundings, and explore the natural world through the lens of a camera.
WHO: Youth ages 8-12 who receive signed permission from their parent or guardian
WHAT: A photo contest with cash prizes and the chance to exhibit a photo in the Children's Gallery at the grand reopening of the California Academy of Sciences on September 27, 2008. Winning photos will be on display throughout the inaugural year, and the majority of photo submissions will be posted in a gallery on the Academy web site.
WHEN: Submissions will be accepted April 15 through May 26, 2008. Work will be judged after the May 26 deadline and winners will be contacted in late June or early July.
HOW TO ENTER: Visit the contest page for details after April 15th.
It is up to each young photographer to decide how they want to convey California in their backyard and support the Academy's mission — to explore, explain and protect the natural world. All photographers entering the contest are encouraged to have fun and be as creative as possible!
The California Academy of Sciences is home to Steinhart Aquarium, Morrison Planetarium and the Kimball Natural History Museum.
