AUGUST EVENTS

New! PENGUINS + PAJAMAS SLEEPOVER (Kids ages 6+ and their adult chaperones)
Friday, August 13 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 am

Why count sheep when you could count geckos, butterflies, sharks, and penguins? Starting this summer, kids can camp out for a night at the California Academy of Sciences—and see the museum in a whole new light. Explore the museum with during an after-hours sleepover that includes a penguin talk, planetarium show, and story time with cookies and milk. EXTREME LIFE SCAVENGER HUNT
Ongoing, pick one up in the Naturalist Center

Extend your visit to the Extreme Mammals exhibit by discovering the variety of exceptional animals and plants found throughout our museum. Find everything from unusually large fish to plants that cling to coastal cliffs. Pick up an Extreme Life Scavenger Hunt in the Naturalist Center. Available in English and Spanish. PENGUIN FEEDINGS
Daily at 10:30 am & 3:30 pm

The Academy’s African penguins are always especially animated during meal time. Watch the birds dip and dive in their tank at the end of African Hall as a biologist dons a wet suit and hands out vitamin-stuffed herring and capelin. CORAL REEF DIVES
Daily at 11:30 am & 2:30 pm

Watch as a diver suits up in SCUBA gear and plunges into the world’s deepest living coral reef exhibit. Outfitted with an underwater microphone, the diver will answer all of your reef-related questions. Free with Academy admission. JOURNEY TO THE STARS PLANETARIUM SHOW
Daily, Proceed to the planetarium entrance upon arrival for the day’s schedule and to get your passes.

Travel through time and space to experience the dramatic lives and deaths of stars. Witness brilliant supernova explosions, dive into the heart of the fiery Sun, and watch it transform into a red giant five billion years in the future. Along the way, you will discover the deep-rooted connection between humanity and the stars. SWAMP TALK

Join us at the Swamp to learn about some of the Academy’s most popular animals, including American alligators and alligator snapping turtles. You’ll find out what it takes to care for these amazing creatures, which are native to swamps in the southeastern United States. Free with Academy admission. GOOGLE EARTH EXPLORATION

EXPLORE THE LIVING ROOF WITH A NATURALIST

LIVE BIRDS OF PREY

Visit the Academy Mews in the West Garden, home to rescued birds of prey including a Barn Owl, Swainson’s Hawk, and Turkey Vulture. ANIMAL TALES – AGES 2-5

Children ages 2-5 and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Early Explorers Cove to listen to tales about nature, science, and the wonderful world around us. NIGHTLIFE – AGES 21 +
Every Thursday from 6:00 to 10:00 pm

Every Thursday night, the Academy opens its doors from 6-10 pm for NightLife, a chance for adults to explore the museum in a whole new light. Dance to some of San Francisco's most popular DJs, enjoy food and cocktails, and mingle with the like-minded while you explore the Academy’s world-class exhibits and get up close and personal with aquarium critters. Take in some knowledge with your libations – each week features provocative science programming and a few surprises. NightLife is for those ages 21 and over; a valid ID is required for entry. SCIENCE STORY ADVENTURES – AGES 6-10

CHAT WITH AN ACADEMY SCIENTIST – AGES 10+

THE LIVING ROOF PROJECT (AGES 12+)
Sunday, August 8 from 9:30am – 12:30 pm

Learn about the Academy’s unique living roof ecosystem while gaining experience in collecting biological data. By participating in this workshop, you will be eligible to return as a qualified citizen scientist to help the Academy collect data for a long-term monitoring project regarding the many plants, birds and insects that inhabit and visit the Living Roof. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes for outdoor activities. For ages 12 and older. Reservations required, call 415-379-8000. $12 for non-members, $10 for members. FAMILY EXPLORATIONS OF GOLDEN GATE PARK (AGES 5+)

This month, join us for an exploration of the Wild Woodlands of Golden Gate Park. Take a closer look at the fascinating world of plants through fun hands-on activities, and learn about the importance of maintaining biodiversity in our parks, and the controversial issue of native versus invasive species. This excursion is led by an Academy Naturalist. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes for outdoor activities. Featuring Dr. Jennifer Heldmann, NASA Ames
