This week, NightLife gives you a second chance to kick off your (lunar) new year.

7:30 - 8:00pm,
 Start your celebration of the "Year of the Monkey" by learning Lion Dance moves from SF’s own Jing Mo Athletic Association, a Chinatown-based martial arts performance troupe.
8:00 - 8:30pm, Follow up your lesson by meeting with and talking to the performers about the tradition of the Lion Dance and the importance of Martial Arts to Chinese culture.
8:30 - 9:00pm, Watch a powerful Lion dance and Martial Arts performance by the Jing Mo Athletic Association.

(African Hall)

6:00-10:00pm, Have fun sewing your own lunar new year animal crafts with Julia Jane Moore. Plus, learn about traditional Chinese teas while sipping samples with Fabula Tea, then chat with in-the-know historians from the Chinese Historical Society of America.

(Coral Reef)

6:00-10:00pm, In the coral reef, groove to exotic, animal-inspired beats from DJ Tanoa while watching thousands of colorful reef fish swim by.

Plus, head to the planetarium to catch a special edition of Earth Update with the Academy’s curator of geology Dr. Peter Roopnarine as he breaks down the science of extinction and food webs.

A variety of food options are available at NightLife from 6:00-9:30 pm, including The Academy Cafe, The Terrace located in the West Garden, and The Academy Cafe Food Cart located in the front lobby. Enjoy a different fresh seasonal "craft on draft" cocktail at each NightLife bar area designed by our resident mixologist Shane McKnight! All bars accept cash and credit cards.

6:00-7:45 pm, Osher Rainforest—explore a lush, four-story rainforest that's teeming with life.

6:00-10:00 pm, Discover a world of dazzling live animals and shimmering scientific specimens in Color of Life


  • Planetarium passes are distributed to visitors on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Special programs and lectures may have limited seating and admission will also be made available to visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.
