NightLife LIVE act

San Francisco (January 6, 2017)—NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences returns in 2017 with a new year of programming and specially curated series highlighting the best of the Academy after hours and new events celebrating some of San Francisco’s most buzzworthy happenings. After eight exciting years of transforming the world’s greenest museum into a Thursday night hotspot for adults 21+, NightLife is pleased to bring science-seeking partygoers more of the signature events they’ve come to know and love, plus new surprises every month. Here’s a preview of what to expect from NightLife in 2017:

A new season of NightLife LIVE

The Academy’s summer music series returns with a to-be-announced line-up. On one select Thursday each month from July through October, NightLife LIVE partners with top Bay Area promoters to pair emerging bands and musicians with cutting-edge visual artists in an innovative intersection of science, music, and art. The only museum in the world to combine an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, and living rainforest, live performances on an outdoor stage will transform the Academy into one of San Francisco’s most unique live music venues. Plus, guests can explore curated works from the Bay Area’s most popular art collectives and studios. Each event will also feature hands-on nature-themed crafts and rotating pop-up shops from local vendors.

New ways to appreciate the tastes of the night

While every NightLife event features creative cocktails and a rotating menu of bites to fuel your exploration, the Academy is excited to present a new tasting experience. Featuring specially curated menus by The Terrace, located in the museum’s West Garden, and beverage pairings that range from whiskey to wine, each tasting offers new and creative ways to expand your palette.

Special series throughout the year and the return of annual favorites

From how-to nights featuring unique, hands-on demonstrations and workshops to evenings celebrating the mind and body with yoga classes throughout the museum, this year NightLife will offer even more of the program’s best-loved events several times a year. Coming up in 2017: the 25th anniversary of the Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival, a celebration of SF Pride, tastings and brew-talks in honor of SF Beer Week, a special SF-style tribute to the Summer of Love, and a science-fueled Halloween bash.

Favorite things and a closer look into the Academy’s collections

From the biologists who help care for 38,000 live animals to the research scientists studying little-known ecosystems on expeditions around the world, there’s no better way to experience the Academy than a curated tour highlighting our insiders’ favorite things. See what gets Academy staff excited and peek behind the scenes during informal pop-up tours throughout the museum. Plus, view scientific specimens from the Academy’s world-class research collections. From birds and butterflies to fish and frogs, each week our scientists and collections managers will present some of the museum’s 46 million scientific specimens and the fascinating stories behind them. Then, gaze at the stars (nevermind that SF fog!) with a “Throwback Thursday” repertoire of Morrison Planetarium’s classic shows.

NightLife is supported by the Koret Foundation.
