Meet Kirana!

yellow-headed python

Come meet our newest star of Snakes & Lizards, an 18-foot-long, 150-pound python named Kirana! The Academy and ABC7 hosted a Name the Snake Contest, and received over 800 entries! Three finalists appeared on 7Live, and the winner was selected by the studio audience.

The winning name was chosen by 9-year-old Bronwyn Miguel from Daly City, CA. Bronwyn is a snake lover who wants to be a herpetologist when she grows up. She chose “Kirana” because “it’s a Balinese girl name which means beautiful ray of light, and the snake, due to its yellow color, looks like a ray of sunshine.”

Bronwyn participated in the snake’s unveiling on July 1, took a behind-the-scenes tour with aquarium biologists, and met live snakes and lizards with Dr. Chris Andrews, resident “Slitherologist”.

Visit Kirana this summer on the Borneo level of the Rainforest dome!

The Academy wishes to thank the following media sponsors of the Snakes & Lizards exhibit:
