The work done in our dep- artment spans many areas within this broad field. The Academy's anthropology collection of approximately 16,000 objects represents material cultures from peoples throughout the world.
The herbarium of the California Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the largest collection of vascular plants in the western United States.

Combining research collections and exploration, with husbandry and engineering skills, members of this department advance our understanding of aquatic organisms.

The Ichthyology department includes an exceptional departmental library and the third most important fish collection in North America. It serves as one of eight International Centers for Ichthyology.
The Academy is governed by a distinguished group of eminent scientists who have been appointed Fellows of the California Academy of Sciences in recognition of their notable contributions to one or more of the natural sciences. Nominated by their colleagues and appointed by the Board of Trustees, the Fellows remain members of the Fellowship for life.
The annual fund will provide support in the amount of $5,000 to a graduate student enrolled either at Occidental College or UCLA, or involved with biological research at the California Academy of Sciences.
