    Bulgarian Music
    Bulgarian folk music is structurally extremely complex and frequently features uneven meters, such as 5/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 11/16. Over the course of this century, Bulgarian music has changed from a solo instrument performance to an ensemble of folk instruments. Join Milen Slavov on the accordion and Peter Iliev on the tupan (a two-headed drum) for a repertoire of traditional and contemporary Bulgarian music. (January 9, 1999)

    Mexican Papel Picado
    The art of cutouts developed in many cultures that had paper or parchment, knives or scissors. Pre-Columbian Mexicans used bark paper as offerings to their gods and as decoration for temples and palaces. Nowadays Mexicans and Chicanos use papel picado (cut-out-paper decoration) to celebrate traditional holidays such as El Dia de los Muertos and everyday celebrations including birthdays, weddings, etc. Artist Carlos Diaz Todd demonstrates this traditional art.     West Coast Blues
    Ron Goldi and his Jack London Band will perform the West Coast Blues--a musical combination with roots in the Chicago and Texas blues traditions. The five members of the band play the harmonica, slide guitar, acoustic guitar, bass and drums. (January 30, 1999)

    Chinese Music
    Wang Hong, a specialist in ancient Chinese folk instruments, plays the erhu, (two-stringed spiked fiddle), dizhi ( bamboo flute), xiao (vertical flute), sheng (mouth organ), bawu (copper membrane flute) and xun (clay flute). Mr. Hong is accompanied by his ensemble, Melody of China. (February 6, 1999)

    Chinese Arts
    Mr. Zhao Quan He, Mr. Huen Moon-Yan and members of the Chinese Arts Association present a day long program of calligraphy, brush painting and stone seal carving. (February 13, 1999)

    Tai-Chi
    Master Zach Ma will introduce us to the ancient martial art of Tai-Chi, including the hand-form and sword-form. Audience participation is welcome. (February 20, 1999)

    African Music and Dance
    A special afternoon program celebrating African heritage and featuring Diamano Coura Senegalese Dance Ensemble, The Gospel Elites, and Dimensions Dance Theater. (February 27, 1999)

    American Ragtime Music
    David Reffkin and The American Ragtime Ensemble will play popular dance and concert music from  the turn of the last century (1890-1920), including pieces by Scott Joplin. (March 13, 1999)

    The History of Bagpipes
    Musician and historian Sean Folsom will explain and demonstrate the differences between a variety of bagpipes, including instruments from Spain, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Scotland and Italy, among others. (March 27, 1999)

    Chinese Medicine
    Doctor Daniel Jiao will speak about the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, especially acupuncture and herbal formulas. (April 3, 1999)

    Indian Dance
    Vishal Ramani and the Shri Krupa Dance Foundation present a program of East Indian Bharatanatyam dance, in its pure Tanjore traditional form. The program will include nrittya expressive dance and nritta pure dance style. (April 10, 1999)

    Eid-Ul Adha Celebration
    The festival of Eid is a sign of the unity of the Islamic faith. It is the "Feast of the Sacrifice", celebrating Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son in obedience to God, and the second main feast of Islam. The Intercultural Alliance of Islamic Art and Education presents a medley of music, dance and costumes from the Middle East, including Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. (April 24, 1999)

    North African Music
    Omar Ait-Vimoun, Director of The Pacific Andaluse Conservatory in San Francisco presents a program of andaluse music, the classical musical tradition of the Imazighen or Berbers of Algeria. The presentation will include singing to the accompaniment of the amandol, (a string instrument) darbuka (hand-held drum) and the kuintara amandol (small version of amandol). (May 1, 1999)

    Mariachi Music
    In celebration of Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) Henry Ortega and his mariachi ensemble of trumpets, violins, guitarron, guitar and vihuela will play a repertoire of boleros, sones, corridos and ranchera music. (May 8, 1999)

    Scholar and musician Martin Espino discusses and demonstrates musical instruments of the ancient Americas. (May 15, 1999)

    Puppet-Making Demonstration
    Nick Barone, a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Puppeteers Guild, will demonstrate the construction of different kinds of puppets, such as hand-puppets, moving-mouth puppets, marionettes, shadow puppets and rod puppets. He will also discuss theatrical sets, and acting, directing and writing scripts for puppet shows. (May 22, 1999)

    Japanese Sushi
    Mrs. Kitachima prepares three different types of sushi: kappa sushi, inarysushi and Spam sushi. She will also share information on where to purchase the best products for sushi making. (May 29, 1999)

    Latin American Storytelling
    Accompanied by a hand-drum, storyteller Olga Loya will relate the Aztec myth of La Diosa Hambrienta (the Hungry Goddess), and the legend of La Llorona, along with other stories from Mexico and Latin America. (June 5, 1999)

    Punjabi Dance
    Members of the Ghungroo Dance Academy, led by Rani and Kaka Bhatia, demonstrate bhangra, a highly energetic and joyful dance style from the Punjab. Although bhangra is traditionally performed by men alone, Ghungroo's presentation includes female performers. (June 12, 1999)

    Hula Dance from Moloka'i
    Moana Dudoit and her Hula Halau from Moloka'i visit San Francisco for an exclusive presentation. The program includes classical kahiko hula and modern 'auwana hula, as well as Moloka'i's own hula ku'i style, to the accompaniment of chants (meles) and live music on indigenous instruments. (June 12-13, 1999)

    Basque Dance
    The Zazpiak Bat Basque dance group will present a program of folk dance and music from Euskal Herria , the Basque Country. Among the dances featured are the Uztai Txiki, from the province of Guipuzkoa, Matelota, from the province of Lapurdi, Euskaldunak from the province of Navarre and the Baso Dantza , in which five dancers demonstrate their skills by dancing on and around a glass of wine. All dances will be accompanied by live musicians playing the accordion and txistu (a flute-like instrument dating back to prehistoric days). (June 19, 1999)

    Film Screening: Red Alexander Shipwright & Folk Artist
    Directed by Ms. Chris Simon and produced by Dr. Archie Green, this 30-minute video portrays Robert "Red" Alexander and his lifelong passion for ship building. The artist, director, and producer will be present at the screening. (July 17, 1999)

    Folk Usage of

    Herbalist Catherine Abby Rich will discuss the medicinal and therapeutic uses of California native plants and will bring samples. (July 24, 1999)

    Peruvian Regional Costumes and Folk Dance
    In celebration of Peru's Independence day, (July 28), Kanchis Dance Ensemble will model Peruvian folk costumes from the coastal and Andean regions. The company will also dance portions of some of the dances from the regions, ending the program with the magnificent dance Kanchis. (July 31, 1999)

    Bee-Keeping
    Helene and Spencer Marshall from Marshall Farms, a San Francisco Bay Area honey company, will discuss how to raise bees and produce honey. The program ends with samplings of local varieties of wildflower honey. (August 7, 1999)

    Norwegian Rosemaling
    Marley Wright Smith shows us the decorative art of rosemaling (rose painting). Appearing mostly in the rural areas of Norway, the rustic floral painting decorates furniture, utensils, walls, ceilings, and the exposed interior structures of Norwegian homes. (August 14, 1999)

    The History and Practice of Archery
    Zach Ma will explain the history of archery, commenting upon the different types of bows and demonstrating the techniques of this martial art with a target. (August 21, 1999)

    Wine Making
    Jay Conner, of Great Fermentations, will talk about the ancient art of wine making. He will cover information on extracting flavors, colors and aromas in the process, transmuting the sugars into alcohol and how to guard the results. The demonstration will include treading of grapes, tasting of the juice and testing for sugar and acid content. (August 28, 1999)

    Harps, Songs and Stories of the Middle Ages
    Nancy Thym-Hochrein will share her knowledge of music from the Middle Ages and play a few instruments from her large collection of harps, including the Romanesque harp, the Scottish harp with brass strings, and the Bray or "Gothic" harp, among others. (September 11, 1999)

    Scottish Fiddle Music
    The San Francisco Scottish Fiddle Club, formed in 1986, will perform a repertoire of traditional airs and rollicking Shetland reels, as well as Highland and Cape Breton jigs and strathspeys. The fiddles will be accompanied by guitars, cellos, flutes, basses and bodhran (Irish hand-drum). (September 18, 1999)

    Japanese Braiding
    Visiting the Academy from Oxford, England, textile artist Rodrick Owen focuses on different methods of braiding, with special emphasis on the kumihimo technique on a takadai loom-skills he learned from master artists in Japan. (September 18, 1999)

    Latin Cinema
    As part of Hispanic Heritage Month and in conjunction with Cine Accion's annual film festival, we are proud to host an afternoon of Latin cinema, including a film by Bay Area filmmaker Alí Allie entitled El Espiritu de mi Mamá ("The Spirit of my Mother") and a short film directed by María Teresa Murillo entitled Un Sueño de Michoacan. (September 25, 1999)

    Nigerian Drumming
    Musician, dancer, performer and educator Onye Onyemaechi presents a workshop on Nigerian drumming and percussion. He will discuss and demonstrate the djembe, talking drum, gongon, congas, bells and shakers, and invite the participation of the audience. You are encouraged to bring drums or other percussion instruments to this special event. (October 9, 1999)

    Cameroonian Cooking
    Chef Peter Taniform of Cafe Cameroon in San Jose demonstrates the preparation of a traditional dish called soya. Eaten day in and day out in Cameroon, soya is made from thinly sliced beef or chicken, which is marinated in a special blend of African herbs and spices and then grilled. (October 16, 1999)

    West African Hair Braiding
    Professional braiders Yamatta Viaan and Fikpee Flomo will create traditional braided hairstyles typical of their homeland of Liberia. Styles to be presented include country plaits, cornrows, and single braids. (October 28-31, 1999)

    Hopi Kachina Dolls
    Visiting the Bay Area from First Mesa, Arizona, Clark Tenakhongua demonstrates the carving and painting of Hopi Indian kachina dolls. This program was made possible by the generous support of The LEF Foundation. (November 4-7, 1999)

    Caribbean Steel Band
    Drawing on a repertoire of Caribbean and Latin standards, Jeff Narell and the Pan Roots Steel Band will create an irresistible carnival atmosphere while narrating the origins of the steel band and the musical form known as "pan." The band's chief instruments are a quartet of tuned oil drums in various sizes. (November 13, 1999)

    West African Wood Carving
    Claude Lockhart Clark will be demonstrating traditional West African woodcarving techniques and displaying samples of his work, which includes ceremonial stools with totemic animals, masks, human figures, and delicately carved walking canes. (November 13-14, 1999)

    Eastern European A Cappella Music
    A quartet of singers from the celebrated women's vocal ensemble Kitka will present an informal musical and cultural overview of the evolution of Balkan women's ensemble singing. Topics include the use of music in everyday life and ritual, variations in national styles (Russian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Hungarian), common musical structures, and various singing techniques. (November 20, 1999)

    Hanukkah Storytelling
    Award-winning Bay Area storyteller Ruth Halpern will sing songs, share riddles, and tell the story of Hanukkah. This program is especially suited for young children. (December 4, 1999)
