WILD LIVES

While exploring streams in the gorges of China's White Cloud Mountain a boy scout named Tan discovered this vibrant and hardy minnow, which was described by a scientist in 1932. The fish soon became popular for home aquariums, since it breeds easily, eats a wide range of food and tolerates water temperatures from 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Another favorite of home aquarists, this shy beauty weaves leaves and other plant pieces into a floating bubble nest built by a mating pair to house the female's eggs. The gourami can survive in streams, ponds, paddies, and ditches. The labyrinth organ, a water-filled chamber near the gills, allows the fish to breathe for short spells in open air or in low- oxygen water.

The fish in our display tanks are part of a long history of collecting. For centuries explorers and travelers brought home exotic plants and animals from distant lands. They kept the unfamiliar new species alive at home, in botanical gardens, zoological parks, or aquariums. In the 1700s Linnaeus devised a system to name and classify diverse species from around the world into a concise hierarchy. That system is taxonomy. Today, as fish keeping is more popular than ever, there is a fertile exchange of information among taxonomists, hobbyists, and collectors. While most newly discovered fish are found by scientists trained in taxonomy, most new technology for keeping fish healthy comes from hobbyists.
