<p>Happy Earth Day! We would like to share a few recent headlines for you to peruse to ponder and protect our planet&#8230;</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><b>Pollution</b></span><br />
From high to low, all around the world, pollution affects our world. Recent headlines show that “Toxic chemicals are accumulating in the ecosystems of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau,” according to <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/organic-pollutants-poison-the-roof-of-the-world-1.12776"><i>Nature</i></a>. Tiny plastic particles aren’t just trouble in the oceans; <a href="http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/349620/description/Puny_plastic_particles_mar_Lake_Eries_waters">the Great Lakes contain millions of microplastics</a>, too. The <a href="http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/20/an-earth-day-thought-litter-matters/"><i>New York Times</i></a>’ Dot Earth blog has a short post about the importance of not littering. And <a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/04/130412-diseases-health-animals-science-environment-oceans"><i>National Geographic</i></a> has an article about how pollution on land can affect marine life like dolphins and local sea otters.</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><b>Colorado River</b></span><br />
While many U.S. rivers have problems with pollution, the Colorado River’s mismanagement, overuse and drought put it atop the list of <a href="http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2013/04/17/americas-most-endangered-river-of-2013-the-colorado/">Endangered Rivers of 2013</a>. <i>National Geographic </i>has <a href="http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/tag/colorado-river-delta-series/">an entire series</a> on the Colorado River delta, and the <i>New York Times </i>has offered both an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/16/science/earth/optimism-builds-for-effort-to-relieve-a-parched-delta-in-mexico.html">article</a> and <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/video/2013/04/16/science/100000002174983/science-times-reviving-the-colorado.html">video</a> last week on the region’s hopeful revival.</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><b>Drought</b></span><br />
Speaking of drought… <a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/04/130415-trees-drought-water-science-global-warming-sounds">Do drought-stressed trees cry for help?</a> French scientists are listening for clues. <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/imageo/?p=1530#.UXWQQYLah7d">Climate change was not responsible for last summer’s Midwestern drought</a>, according to NOAA, but then <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21829134.600-climates-role-in-us-droughts-is-under-scrutiny.html">what was?</a> And <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/climate-models-fail-to-predict-us-droughts-1.12810">how might we be able to predict future droughts?</a></p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><b>Climate Change</b></span><br />
Climate change may not have caused of the recent drought, but it is responsible for other devastating events and looming disasters: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/16/science/co2-buildup-could-spell-more-turbulence-in-flights.html">bumpier flights</a>, <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/climate-change-brings-stormier-weather-to-the-us-1.12763">more storms</a>, <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=pine-bark-beetles-poised-for-new-attacks-on-canadas-boreal-forests">bark beetle plagues</a>, <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=storm-surges-rising-seas-could-doom-pacific-islands-this-century">drowned islands</a>, <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=more-global-warming-speeds-climate-shifts">failures in agriculture systems</a> and more <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/climate-zones-will-shift-faster-as-world-warms-1.12838">extinctions</a>. Researchers are also getting a better handle on tracking climate change through <a href="http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/04/oceans">mapping ocean eddies</a> and looking at <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=new-method-proves-climate-change-is-real">historic ocean temperatures and air pressure</a>.</p>
<p><b><span style="color: #888888;">Ecology</span> </b><br />
How do species react to environmental changes? <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22039872">Rapid evolution</a>, according to one study. Another study suggests that <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23396-extinction-debt-suggests-endangered-species-are-doomed.html">endangered species are already doomed</a>. And <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/forest-ecology-splinters-of-the-amazon-1.12816"><i>Nature</i></a><i> </i>offers an update on a decades-long study of habitat fragmentation in the Amazon.</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><b>Energy</b></span><br />
How has energy usage in our country changed over the past two hundred years? <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2013/04/10/176801719/two-centuries-of-energy-in-america-in-four-graphs">NPR</a> has a graph (or four) for that. In response, <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-to-power-the-world"><i>Scientific American</i></a> presents a diagram illustrating our potential for future alternative energy use and resources accompanying an article titled, “How to Power the World without Fossil Fuels.” Germany seems to have taken notice—the European country has ambitious <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/renewable-power-germany-s-energy-gamble-1.12755">renewable plans</a>. But it&#8217;s not the only one. The U.S. had a huge year in 2012 for <a href="http://www.greatenergychallengeblog.com/2013/04/16/inside-the-wind-power-industrys-report-10-geeky-facts/">wind power</a>. And, heading across the country soon? How about a <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/onepercent/2013/04/solar-impulse.html">solar-powered flight</a>?</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><b>Earth Day</b></span><br />

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Or so the headlines have read for the past few days. Here’s the skinny on the largest solar storm since 2003…</p>
<p>We’ve reported on solar storms before, especially NOAA’s and NASA’s urge to <a href="../preparing-for-solar-storms/">prepare</a> and <a href="../preparing-for-solar-storms/">educate</a> agencies and individuals as we head into the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_maximum">solar maximum</a>.</p>
<p>When a solar flare and <a href="http://solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/CMEs.shtml">coronal mass ejection</a> (CME) erupted from the Sun around 9:00 p.m. PDT on January 23, satellites captured the events in stunning detail. The Bad Astronomer offers a great video and description of the events and their power on his <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/01/24/the-sun-aims-a-storm-right-at-earth-expect-aurorae-tonight/"><em>Discover</em></a><em> </em>blog.</p>
<p>These massive storms affect us here on Earth in many different ways, both beautiful and bad. The beautiful? Aurorae in stunning detail and farther reaches than usual. <em>Universe Today </em>offers two articles on aurora <a href="http://www.universetoday.com/92929/what-causes-aurora/">cause</a> and <a href="http://www.universetoday.com/92936/cloudy-too-far-south-how-to-see-the-aurora-no-matter-where-you-live/">effect</a>; the <a href="http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/2">Geophysical Institute</a> offers a forecast and locations to view the displays.</p>
<p>The bad? Power surges and outages, satellite and radio communication interruptions, even <a href="http://www.universetoday.com/92897/can-solar-flares-hurt-astronauts/">exposure to radiation for astronauts</a>. Luckily, as solar storms go, this recent one is only reaching G1 levels on <a href="http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/">NOAA’s storm scale</a>—G5 is the highest.</p>
<p>Still, there were <a href="http://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&amp;day=24&amp;month=01&amp;year=2012">reports</a> of a power surge in Norway yesterday and <a href="http://www.newsdaily.com/stories/tre80n28i-us-delta/">news</a> of airline companies rerouting polar flights to avoid disruptions of aircraft communications.</p>
<p>With satellites such as NASA’s <a href="http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/">SDO</a> and <a href="http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/">SOHO</a> constantly gathering data on the Sun from every angle and NOAA interpreting the data for the general public, it appears that the news outlets were ready for anything. Score one for preparedness!</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tsunamis, the solar max and… oysters? Our Friday science news round-up featuring headlines from this week’s <a href="http://sites.agu.org/fallmeeting/">American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting</a>.</p>
<p>With the AGU meeting in town, it was a great week for science news! We covered several topics on <a href="../dangerous-kilauea/">Tuesday</a>, <a href="../voyager-headlines/">Wednesday</a>, and <a href="../drought-past-and-future/">Thursday</a>—and we’ll highlight a few more of them here for you.</p>
<p>Monday’s sessions included several discussions about the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in Japan—its effects on the local population and on far-reaching areas as well as how we can forecast future events.</p>
<p>One of the biggest surprises came during a presentation by <a href="http://outreach.eri.u-tokyo.ac.jp/2011/11/okiaward/">Satoko Oki</a> of the Earthquake Research Institute. She collected data from Japanese residents before and after the 2011 tsunami and found them less prepared for tsunamis after the Tohoku hit! When polled post 2011, they misidentified the minimum wave height from which to evacuate. They had correctly identified the minimum height less than a year before. The 80beats blog in <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2011/12/06/after-tsunami-japanese-people-think-waves-are-less-dangerous-what/"><em>Discover</em></a><em> </em>identifies the problem succinctly:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The Tohoku tsunami was so large–about 130 feet–that it may have dragged people’s expectations of what’s dangerous higher.</p>
<p>Another presentation revealed why the tsunami was so devastating—it was a “merging tsunami.” NASA researchers found that the tsunami doubled in intensity over rugged ocean ridges, amplifying its destructive power at landfall. This <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/tsunami20111205.html">animation</a> on NASA’s website illustrates the direction and power quite well.</p>
<p>The discovery helps explain how tsunamis can cross ocean basins to cause massive destruction at some locations while leaving others unscathed. The data raise hope that scientists may be able to improve tsunami forecasts.</p>
<p>Switching perspective from the oceans to outer space… NASA and NOAA held a joint workshop Tuesday on preparing for the solar max. As solar storms increase over the next 20 months or so, we can be prepared for what might and might not happen. This might remind you of a press briefing held earlier this year at the AAAS meeting that we covered <a href="../preparing-for-solar-storms/">here</a>. It certainly reminded us how active the Sun can be, even during quiet times, as shown in this beautiful <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_MKL_fjDLo">NASA video</a> of SDO’s first year in space.</p>
<p>Finally, the Academy’s own <a href="http://research.calacademy.org/izg/staff/proopnarine">Peter Roopnarine</a> presented at the meeting on his research on oysters in the Gulf of Mexico. With colleagues, Peter has been testing for contaminants in the shells of oysters before and after the spill and hopes to model the spread of contaminants to other species through the food web. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>NASA’s <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/Glory/main/index.html">Glory</a> satellite is scheduled to launch in the wee hours of this Friday, March 4<sup>th</sup> from Vandenberg Air Force Base here in California.</p>
<p>Glory was to lift-off last week, but technical issues with ground support equipment for the Taurus XL launch vehicle postponed the event. NASA says those issues have been resolved and Glory is back on track!</p>
<p>Glory will be an important tool in understanding the Earth’s climate. One of its missions is to detect and measure the small particles in the Earth’s atmosphere called aerosols. Aerosols, or the gases that lead to their formation, can come from vehicle tailpipes and desert winds, from sea spray and fires, volcanic eruptions and factories. Even lush forests, soils or communities of plankton in the ocean can be sources of certain types of aerosols.</p>
<p>The ubiquitous particles drift in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere, from the stratosphere to the surface, and range in size from a few nanometers, less than the width of the smallest viruses, to several tens of micrometers, about the diameter of human hair.</p>
<p>The particles can directly influence climate by reflecting or absorbing the sun&#8217;s radiation. In broad terms, this means bright-colored or translucent aerosols, such as sulfates and sea salt aerosols, tend to reflect radiation back towards space and cause cooling. In contrast, darker aerosols, such as black carbon and other types of carbonaceous particles, can absorb significant amounts of light and contribute to atmospheric warming.</p>
<p>Aerosols are short-lived and their impacts are not fully understood. From <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=improved-solar-observations-through-glory-and-climate-change"><em>Scientific American</em></a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">NASA climate expert and Glory science team member James Hansen has said the range of uncertainty associated with the climate impact of aerosols is three or four times that of greenhouse gases.</p>
<p>Glory hopes to remedy that uncertainty.</p>
<p>In addition, Glory will monitor variations in solar activity by measuring the amount of radiation that strikes the top of Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. The sun has been in a relatively quiet phase, even as we head to the solar maximum. The satellite could allow scientists to understand how this and future solar cycles influence climate here on Earth.</p>
<p>As Glory monitors the Earth’s climate, we’ll be monitoring news from the mission. Stay tuned!</p>

<p>An international panel, speaking about solar storms at the recent <a href="http://www.aaas.org/meetings/">AAAS Meeting</a>, began their presentation by saying, “Don’t panic.”</p>
<p>Despite the fact that the sun is increasing its activity and will enter the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_maximum">solar maximum</a> in 2013, space weather technology and satellites are improving so that solar storms will be easier to predict and prepare for.</p>
<p>Sunspots appear leading to and during the solar maximum and can erupt into <a href="http://hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov/sftheory/flare.htm">solar flares</a> or <a href="../cowabunga-surfing-the-sun/">coronal mass ejections</a> that can cause geomagnetic storms here on Earth&#8211; affecting radio communications, GPS signals, and radar systems. They can even knock out power grids and destroy satellites.</p>
<p>There are eleven space weather centers around the world that track these storms. These centers originated in the 1940s, during World War II. They provide an early warning system of coming storms to governments, airlines, power companies, cellphone providers and other clients. Similar to hurricanes and other Earth-originated storms, they have a measuring system to track the severity of solar storms. You can see the categories <a href="http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/NOAAscales/">here</a>.</p>
<p>With the <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/stereo/main/index.html">STEREO</a> satellites and <a href="http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/">SDO</a> now constantly watching the sun, storms can be tracked across its entire globe, giving the space weather centers a head start. Depending on the type of storm, it can take hours or days for the effects to reach Earth.</p>
<p>Two weeks ago, a <a href="http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/02/weak-solar-storm/">large solar flare</a> captured by SDO allowed scientists to warn airlines to re-route flights away from the poles, where the effects are felt most. SDO also captured an amazing <a href="http://www.universetoday.com/83540/sdo-captures-a-monster-solar-prominence/">flare last Thursday</a>. Since the flare occurred away from Earth, no storms will reach us currently. However as sunspot 1163 (the origination of the flare) turns towards Earth, we could get hit, according to <a href="http://www.spaceweather.com/"><em>SpaceWeather.com</em></a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/">NOAA</a>, working with FEMA and other government agencies, is getting better at modeling possible severe solar storm scenarios and trying to, through conferences like these, raise awareness, not incite panic.</p>

<p>Despite being in the wrong place, at the wrong time, we were able to catch incredible glimpses of <a href="http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2011/01/the_first_solar_eclipse_of_201.html">the solar eclipse</a> this week through photos throughout the web.</p>
<p>DNA sequencing started the year off right. <a href="http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-01/dna-sequencing-appears-have-saved-its-first-child"><em>Popular Science</em></a> reported that “<a href="http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-01/dna-sequencing-appears-have-saved-its-first-child">For the First Time, DNA Sequencing Technology Saves A Child&#8217;s Life</a>.” Doctors, desperate to find the cause of a boy’s severe illness, sequenced his genes, discovered a mutation and were able to prescribe a treatment that appears to be working. A new machine could make this practice more common. An article in the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/health/05gene.html"><em>New York Times</em></a><em> </em>this week described a more affordable sequencing machine. At $50,000, the Personal Genome Machine is significantly less than standard machines and “could expand the use of DNA sequencing from specialized centers to smaller university and industrial labs, and into hospitals and doctors’ offices.”</p>
<p>What is causing birds to fall out of the sky and fish to die from <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2011/01/happy-new-year-its-raining-bir.html">Arkansas</a> to <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/01/05/132675539/latest-report-of-animal-carnage-2-million-fish-die-in-chesapeake-bay">Maryland</a> and Brazil to <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/video.cfm?id=739931956001">Sweden</a>? Cold weather? Hail storms? Fireworks? The end of the world? There’s been much hype and speculation, but <a href="http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/aroundthemall/2011/01/smithsonian-bird-curator-die-off-is-not-such-a-big-deal/">scientists</a> don’t appear to be worried. The Academy’s own <a href="http://research.calacademy.org/om/staff/jdumbacher">Jack Dumbacher</a> is getting samples from the southern occurrences—he’s planning on testing the corpses for viruses. You can track these deaths yourself through <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2011/01/mass-dying-of-animals-plotted.html">Google maps</a> or the <a href="http://www.nwhc.usgs.gov/mortality_events/ongoing.jsp">US Geological Survey</a>.</p>
<p>Finally, after topping the science news headlines last year, oil in the Gulf reappeared this week, at least on news sites. Have bacteria consumed nearly all of the methane from the spill? A study published in <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/content/early/2011/01/05/science.1199697"><em>Science</em></a><em> </em>this week suggests that’s the case. Ed Yong finds a lot of support for the paper in his blog on <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2011/01/06/bacteria-ate-up-all-the-methane-that-spilled-from-the-deepwater-horizon-well/"><em>Discover</em></a>; <a href="http://gulfblog.uga.edu/">Samantha Joye</a> tells <a href="http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/68461/title/Methane_from_BP_spill_goes_missing"><em>Science News</em></a>,<em> </em>“Just because you can’t find methane in the spot where you lowered your [instruments] doesn’t mean there’s no methane out there somewhere.”</p>
<p>Also, the president’s oil spill commission released the first chapter of its report this week. (The entire report will be available next week.) An excerpt from the chapter in <a href="http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2011/01/oil-spill-commission-roundup.html"><em>Science </em>Insider</a> reports that the blame for the disaster can be shared among the companies responsible for the well.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Most of the mistakes and oversights at Macondo can be traced back to a single overarching failure—a failure of management.</p>
<p>And sadly, this may not be an unusual event, according to the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/06/science/earth/06spill.html"><em>New York Times</em></a><em>:</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The commission warned that without major changes, another such accident was likely.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>2010 was a year for exciting science news—think exoplanets, synthetic-life, arsenic-eating bacteria (or not!), earthquakes, volcanoes and of course, the Gulf oil spill. Many science news sites have their 2010 best lists posted—here are some of the highlights…</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>Earth</strong></span></p>
<p>The Gulf oil spill—the number of gallons spilled and the controversy surrounding <a href="../?s=oil+spill">the damage</a> seems to top many lists this year. <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/specials/2010/index.html"><em>Nature</em></a><em> </em>even named Jane Lubchenco, head of NOAA, its newsmaker of the year for how she handled the crisis.</p>
<p>Natural disasters often took the front page in 2010 with the <a href="../seismic-hazards-in-haiti/">Haitian earthquake</a> and the <a href="../volcanic-ash-2/">eruption of Eyjafjallajökull</a> topping many lists. The hard-to-pronounce Icelandic volcano also made many of the best science <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/2010/101220/full/4681018a.html">images</a> of the year lists.</p>
<p><a href="http://news.discovery.com/earth/earth-environment-green-2010-101228.html"><em>Discovery</em>News</a> ends the year on a positive note with “How Humans Helped the Earth in 2010,” a slide show with text concerning recent strides in alternative energy, species and habitat conservation efforts and individual efforts to go green (electric cars, <a href="../cool-roofs/">white roofs</a> and saving energy).</p>
<p>For more environmental news of the year, <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2010/12/2010-review-the-year-in-enviro.html"><em>New Scientist</em></a>’s Short Sharp Science has a great review and the <a href="http://blog.nature.org/2010/12/best-and-worst-environmental-moments-of-2010-2/">Nature Conservancy</a> has a best/worst list on its site.</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>Life</strong></span></p>
<p>Teeny, modified life stole the spotlight this year—the J. Craig Venter Institute’s so-called “<a href="../synthetic-cell/">synthetic cell</a>” and <a href="../arsenic-and-old-gfaj-1/">GFAJ-1</a>—the bacteria that incorporates arsenic into its DNA—or so NASA scientists claimed.  Science writer Carl Zimmer discredited the arsenic bacteria paper on <a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2276919/"><em>Slate</em></a>; NASA author Felisa Wolfe-Simon defended herself in <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/content/330/6012/1734.full"><em>Science</em></a>. Fun stuff!</p>
<p>The spread of pesky <a href="../bedbugs-media-darlings/">bedbugs</a> was number six in <a href="http://discovermagazine.com/photos/100-top-science-stories-of-2010"><em>Discover</em></a>’s “Top 100 Science Stories of 2010.”</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nature.com/news/specials/2010/reader_topten.html"><em>Nature</em></a>’s great article this past summer on <a href="../mosquito-eradication/">eradicating mosquitoes</a> was among its readers’ top choices of the year.</p>
<p>Looking for something a little bigger and less controversial? <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/gallery/zoologger-best-of-2010"><em>New Scientist</em></a><em> </em>has “The coolest animals of 2010,” which includes a scorpion-eating bat and a fly thought to be extinct for over 160 years!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.npr.org/2010/12/28/132243863/2010-a-good-year-for-neanderthals-and-dna">NPR</a> found it was a very good year for Neanderthals—their genome was sequenced, <a href="../brains-on-the-brain/">brain examined</a> and <a href="../neanderthal-diet/">diet expanded</a>.</p>
<p>Remarkably, <a href="../census-of-marine-life/">the Census of Marine Life</a> tops the BP oil spill in the <a href="http://alistairdove.com/blog/2010/12/28/five-of-the-biggest-marine-science-stories-in-2010.html">Deep Type Flow</a> blog’s biggest marine science stories of the year for its sheer numbers:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">…over 500 research expeditions covering every ocean, over 2,500 scientists and the discovery of over 6,000 species new to science and published in over 2600 peer-reviewed papers.</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>Space</strong></span></p>
<p><em><a href="http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2010/12/top-10-sciencenows-from-2010.html">ScienceNow</a></em>’s most popular story of all time, not just 2010, was “<a href="http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2010/04/does-our-universe-live-inside-a-.html">Does Our Universe Live Inside a Wormhole?</a>” A wonderful theory that we also <a href="../a-universe-inside-a-universe/">covered</a> last spring.</p>
<p>Exoplanets, in part thanks to the <a href="../secret-exoplanets/">Kepler</a> mission, were all over the news this year—whether it had to do with <a href="../earth-like-planets/">size</a>, <a href="../puzzling-planets/">atmosphere</a> or <a href="../keplers-new-system/">number</a> within a star system. <a href="http://discovermagazine.com/2011/jan-feb/11"><em>Discover</em></a>’s interview with local exoplanet hunter (and California Academy of Sciences Fellow) Geoff Marcy made number 11(!) on their 100 top stories list.</p>
<p>A little closer to home, <a href="../jupiters-missing-belt/">Jupiter’s missing stripe</a> and Neptune’s tale of cannibalism are included in <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/gallery/most-popular-space-stories-2010"><em>New Scientist</em></a>’s most popular space stories of 2010.</p>
<p><a href="../moon-water-and-whale-poop/">Our Moon</a> and <a href="../?s=saturn+moon">Saturn’s moons</a> made news throughout the year and the top lists on <em><a href="http://www.universetoday.com/82020/the-votes-are-in-top-10-stories-of-2010/">Universe Today</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/12/top-scientific-discoveries/">Wired</a> </em>this week.</p>
<p><em>Universe Today </em>also included <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sdo/main/index.html">SDO</a>’s new views of the sun in their top stories list. Stunning!</p>
<p><a href="http://hubblesite.org/">Hubble</a> celebrated its 20<sup>th</sup> year in space this year by taking even more beautiful images. Several are included in <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/12/14/the-top-14-astronomy-pictures-of-2010/">Bad Astronomy</a>’s “Top 14 Astronomy Pictures of 2010.”</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>Technology</strong></span></p>
<p>Electric cars and NASA’s new foray into <a href="../falcon-9-takes-off/">commercial spacecraft</a> are included in <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/slideshow.cfm?id=top-10-science-stories-of-2010"><em>Scientific American</em></a>’s top ten stories of the year.</p>
<p>The Large Hadron Collider was very <a href="../?s=lhc">busy</a> this year, and topped many lists. Another machine at CERN made <a href="../trapping-antimatter/">news</a> (and also topped <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/specials/2010/reader_topten.html"><em>Nature</em></a>’s readers’ choice list) when it was able to capture antimatter for a sixth of a second!</p>
<p>Graphene not only garnered a Nobel Prize this year, the material (and it’s potential) also made <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/2010/012345/full/4681018a/slideshow/1.html?identifier=1">news</a> and <a href="http://discovermagazine.com/2011/jan-feb/14">top science lists</a> of the year.</p>
<p><a href="http://news.discovery.com/earth/earth-environment-green-2010-101228.html"><em>Discovery</em>News</a> put plastics on their 2010 list—whether its finding new ways of <a href="../the-plastiki-sets-sail/">removing plastic from the oceans</a> or <a href="../plastics/">engineering smarter plastics</a>.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Can Oriental hornets harness energy from the sun?]]></description>
				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As humans improve upon solar technology—harnessing the sun’s light for energy—plants must be howling with laughter. With photosynthesis, they’ve been doing exactly that, quite efficiently, for hundreds of millions of years.</p>
<p>Now scientists have discovered an insect that might also convert the sun’s energy for fuel. Publishing in the journal <a href="http://www.springerlink.com/content/w657861740333733/"><em>Naturwissenschaften</em></a>, the researchers describe the process by which the Oriental hornet uses its exoskeleton to absorb sunlight.</p>
<p>Since the 1990s, scientists noticed that these insects were different. They are most active during the hottest, brightest part of the day, unlike most wasps. Around that time, scientists also discovered that the Oriental hornet could actually produce voltage along its exoskeleton.</p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://blogs.plos.org/retort/2010/12/07/photoelectric-wasps/"><em>PLoS</em></a> Blog The Gleaming Retort, in 2009, the same scientists:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">…showed that, unexpectedly, a variety of important metabolic activities seem to center on the yellow abdominal stripes of the Oriental hornets rather than around the fat bodies that normally handle them in insects. (Think about what this means: if the same arrangement applied to humans, our skin would be doing the job of our livers.)</p>
<p>Remember, beauty is not always only skin deep. The current research dug deeper into the exoskeleton. Looking at the brown and yellow areas of the hornet, the scientists went all the way down to the nano-level of its exoskeleton. They found that the yellow area would scatter the light, not reflect it, allowing it to penetrate into the deep layers of the exoskeleton. Essentially, the yellow areas were trapping the sunlight.</p>
<p>With the trapped sunlight, the yellow pigment, Xanthopterin, then works to use it. According to lead author Marian Plotkin, in <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_9254000/9254445.stm">BBC News</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">&#8220;Xanthopterin works as a light harvesting molecule transforming light into electrical energy.&#8221;</p>
<p>So do these Oriental hornets use photsynthesis to power their movements? According to <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/discoblog/2010/12/07/bug-juice-hornet-may-turn-sunlight-into-electricity/"><em>Discover</em></a>’s Discoblog, there’s not yet enough evidence</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">… but they’re working on it.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Surprisingly, reduced solar activity may actually cause warmer temperatures here on Earth.]]></description>
				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Decreased solar activity does not necessarily mean lower temperatures here on Earth. In fact, recent research shows that it could mean exactly the opposite.</p>
<p>Using satellite data from NASA’s Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (<a href="http://lasp.colorado.edu/sorce/index.htm">SORCE</a>) satellite, researchers found that between 2004 and 2007, low solar activity actually resulted in more energy and visible light reaching the Earth, warming our climate. The findings are published today in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v467/n7316/full/nature09426.html"><em>Nature</em></a>.</p>
<p><a href="../solar-activity/">Solar activity</a> increases and decreases over a cycle that lasts roughly 11 years. Even after centuries of study, we have only begun to get a complete picture of the process. From a corresponding article in <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/2010/101006/full/news.2010.519.html"><em>Nature</em></a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Sunspots, dark areas of reduced surface temperature on the Sun caused by intense magnetic activity, are the best-known visible manifestation of the 11-year solar cycle. They have been regularly observed and recorded since the dawn of modern astronomy in the seventeenth century. But measurements of the wavelengths of solar radiation have until now been scant.</p>
<p>Instruments on the SORCE satellite measure the Sun’s energy output at many different wavelengths of light. Researchers fed the data from SORCE into an existing computer model of Earth’s atmosphere and compared their results with the results obtained using earlier, less comprehensive, data on the solar spectrum.</p>
<p>And the results were shocking. From <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20827813.700-suns-activity-flies-in-face-of-climate-expectations.html"><em>New Scientist</em></a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Previous studies have shown that Earth is normally cooler during solar minima. Yet the model suggested that more solar energy reached the planet’s surface during the period, warming it by about 0.05°C.</p>
<p>This surprising finding led the researchers to believe that the inverse might also be true: in periods when the Sun’s activity increases, it might tend to cool, rather than warm, Earth. But, they warn, more data are needed.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/%7Ejoanna/">Joanna Haigh</a>, an atmospheric physicist at Imperial College London and lead author of the study, said:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">These results are challenging what we thought we knew about the Sun’s effect on our climate. However, they only show us a snapshot of the Sun’s activity and its behavior over the three years of our study could be an anomaly.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">We cannot jump to any conclusions based on what we have found during this comparatively short period and we need to carry out further studies to explore the Sun’s activity, and the patterns that we have uncovered, on longer timescales. However, if further studies find the same pattern over a longer period of time, this could suggest that we may have overestimated the Sun’s role in warming the planet, rather than underestimating it.</p>
<p>In addition, Martin Dameris, an atmospheric scientist at the German Aerospace Center, warns that human activity still lies at the heart of our current warming trend. As quoted in the <em>Nature </em>article:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The findings could prove very significant when it comes to understanding, and quantifying, natural climate fluctuations. But no matter how you look at it, the Sun’s influence on current climate change is at best a small natural add-on to man-made greenhouse warming.</p>

<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>August 27<sup>th</sup> – Big Mars Day</strong></span></p>
<p>Despite what you may have heard, or read, Mars will not be bigger than the Moon in the sky tonight. It hasn’t ever been, nor will it ever be. In fact, tonight Mars will be about as far as it can get from Earth—195 million miles away.</p>
<p>It all started on August, 27, 2003 when Mars was very close, about 34 million miles from us, the closest in 60,000 years. But even then, it was still smaller than the Moon. From <a href="http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2010/25aug_marshoax/">NASA</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">At the height of the display, Mars was about 75 times smaller than the full Moon.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">That&#8217;s when &#8220;the virus&#8221; was born.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Someone, somewhere, reasoned as follows: If Mars is 75 times <em>smaller</em> than the Moon, then magnifying it 75 times should make it <em>equal</em> to the Moon… &#8220;At a modest 75 times magnification,&#8221; the [email] message stated, &#8220;Mars will look as big as the full Moon to the naked eye.&#8221;</p>
<p>The email was altered and forwarded and continues to surface every August 27<sup>th</sup>. Will the hoax ever die? From <em><a href="http://www.universetoday.com/72216/tonights-the-night-mars-will-not-look-as-big-as-the-full-moon/">Universe Today</a>:</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I wasn&#8217;t going to write an article about the Mars-Moon Hoax this year because I thought it was too passé, but I just looked at some stats and saw that our article on the topic from 2007, <a href="http://www.universetoday.com/11448/will-the-mars-look-as-big-as-the-moon-on-august-27-nope/">&#8220;Will Mars Look as Big as the Full Moon On August 27? Nope&#8221; </a>has gotten over 50,000 hits the past few days…</p>
<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>Big Solar</strong></span></p>
<p>Wednesday, the California Energy Commission approved the Beacon Solar Energy Project, which would be “the largest solar power plant in the world” [<em><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2010/08/26/26greenwire-1000-megawatt-plant-in-calif-marks-new-milesto-25893.html">New York Times</a></em>]. It will be built on the edge of the Mojave Desert, covering over 2,000 acres, and when it’s operational&#8211; hopefully by the end of next year&#8211; it should be producing 250 megawatts of energy.</p>
<p>This isn’t your standard solar, according to “80beats” in <em><a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2010/08/27/california-pushes-ahead-with-massive-solar-thermal-projects/">Discover</a></em>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Beacon is solar thermal: Rather than converting sunlight to electricity through photovoltaic cells, solar thermal projects use mirrors to concentrate the heat of the sun, creating steam to turn turbines.</p>

<p><span style="color: #888888;"><strong>Caterpillar Munching Trouble and Lizard Live Births</strong></span></p>
<p>We’re running out of room, but we can’t leave out these two awesome evolution stories!</p>
<p>An article published in <em><a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/329/5995/1075">Science</a> </em>today describes tobacco plants that have evolved to release chemicals when caterpillars chew on the leaves. The chemicals call out to caterpillar predators. Booby-trapped!
