The series, Annotated Checklists of Fishes, beginning 2003, serves to provide the most up-to-date taxonomic treatment of each family of Recent fishes. Experts in each group will use information from Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes database along with their own records to identify available scientific names that have not yet been assigned as valid names or synonyms.

Annotated Checklists of Fishes meets the requirements set forth in Art. 8.6 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, 4th ed. (1999) through deposition of at least five permanent copies [CD-ROM] of each number in the series at libraries. At least six copies on CD-ROM will be deposited at the following natural history institution libraries:

  • The Natural History Museum, London
  • Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris
  • Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC
  • California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco
  • American Museum of Natural History, New York
  • The Australian Museum, Sydney

Additional copies may be deposited in other libraries as well.

The checklists are available at no charge in postscript document format (PDF) and are arranged alphabetically below. Click on any family to download.
