There were skin/feather injuries from the parent. This was the couples first offspring and they were inexperienced in their care. “Dunker” was hand raised by the staff from Day 12 on. Since “Dunker”, the couple has reared another chick successfully.

I always thought the patch on the back of Dunker looks like a Kick Me sign, so I call him KickMe. Good thing I know his real name now, though I may have trouble recognizing him without his little sign! :)

How did he get injured? Did he fall or did another penguin hurt him? I have seen the penguins fight sometimes.
