Thanks and keep up the good work, watching the pengies is good for my blood pressure!

Hi Karen, the bird you saw molting is actually Pierre's mate Homey and she's doing just fine. What you saw was probably an artifact of the webcams; last Wednesday her behind was starting to fill in with new feathers and was not pink. However, for whatever reason, Homey does tend to molt differently than the rest of the penguins so it's not surprising that you were concerned. I call her "the vulture" because of her different and signature appearance throughout molting. I'll try to take a picture of her today and post it on the blog so you can get a better idea of what she actually looks like.

Pierre is the final bird to molt for the year and has been exhibiting an increased appetite and weight gain. I expect him to start molting within the nest week...stay tuned!

Hi again! I am a little bit freaked out today as I just logged in and saw a penguin walking around with what looked like a totally pink behind showing.
I thought I heard that when these birds molt the new feathers sort of push out the old. I therefore also thought that pink is not a color we would normally see on them (except around their eyes). I don't remember seeing any other pink areas when the birds have been molting but it's hard to see clearly with the low level of pixilation on the webcams so maybe I just missed it.
Is a pink behind normal? Is the bird with the pink behind having a problem with his molt and, if so, will he be wearing a wet suit anytime soon? I think a couple of days ago I heard that Pierre was starting his molt cycle and I am hoping it is not his cute little pink behind that I saw.
Or am I just being a nervous new "Penguin Auntie" from afar and everything's fine and normal? I sure hope so. . .
