Pomona the Island: White w/ Green Band Left Wing

Hatched at the Academy on 23 October 2007, “Pomona” is maturing quickly. As one of the youngest penguins, she was early to grow her adult feathers and to court potential male penguin suitors. Her name was a result of a website contest we had in early 2008. Members voted on several choices for names and ”Pomona” prevailed. Most assume the name “Pomona” has something to do with the Southern California city. However, “Pomona” was chosen because there is a group of Penguin Islands off the Namibian Coast and one of those islands is named Pomona Island.-Pamela Schaller
