African penguin Exhibit: Crabs and Penguins?

Yes. We have introduced 39 Red Rock Crabs into the penguin exhibit. Occasionally you will get a glance at them with the underwater camera (when the penguins haven’t moved the camera). Or you might also see them very active after the penguin feeds. They were introduced in order to pick up the fish that the penguins do not eat. After the feeds, they scurry out, grab a capelin or herring that the penguins have dropped and scurry back with their large catch. We will start to introduce more invertebrates this year in order to have a more realistic dynamic underwater environment for our African penguins.-Pamela Schaller
