African penguin Conservation: Uplisted to Endangered by the IUCN

It is official, according the IUCN website the African penguin has been uplisted to Endangered A2ace+3ce+4ace ver 3.1. This is due to a very rapid decline in the population for the varied reasons listed in our previous blog posts. The population is now at 52,000 mature individuals. Some of the main Conservation Actions include: Monitor population trends, continue/maintain SANCCOB oil spill rehabilitation centers, initiate research into the impacts of fishing and predation, management of purse-seine fisheries, determine source of and prevent chronic oil spills, investigate reintroduction and translocation techniques and several more. How smart are penguins? It is said that penguins tend to hide their intelligence very well because they are stubborn! Penguins act like cats and penguins have a mind of their own!
