Fragmentation and sequence in creating narrative is a recurring theme in my work. I’m particularly interested in scientific data that represent shifts across space and time, and in how artists translate such information into subjective imagery. My 2014 sculptural installation, Phase Transition, is an example of this, as its composition is based on a line graph which tracks Arctic sea ice extent over the last 1,450 years.
This and the following sketchbook pages are inspired by the formal qualities of indexical data and the stories they tell. My re-invented charts and diagrams allow personal readings regarding the passage of time, events, and consequences, impelling viewers to think about how they map, dissect and understand information.
