African Hall

  • At 7 PM, Join Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Geography, and Environmental Studies Tony Marks-Block in a discussion about the history of cultural burns in California, and uncover how these indigenous solutions can bolster native wildlife and ecosystems.
  • At 8 PM, Learn how Brown Girl Surf is both increasing access to surfing and amplifying the voices of surfers of color in a live panel discussion moderated by BGS volunteer and the Academy’s own Olivia VanDamme.

  • Check out Marlim Reynosa of Brown Girl Surf as she performs a traditional Afro-Caribbean dance to the rhythms of palo and salve music—a nod to her Dominican roots and culture.

  • Tap into your creative side with a “quintessential California” watercolor workshop that focuses on native plants and animals using the Academy’s collections as inspiration. Guided by Tiffany Bozic and Jack Dumbacher.

  • Chat with Academy scientists while exploring a pop-up showcase of tables highlighting the critical work of the Academy’s new Thriving California initiative.

A few don't-miss NightLife details:

  • To help keep staff and guests safe and ensure everyone has plenty of room to roam, NightLife will be limiting capacity and have timed-entry tickets. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required, boosters are strongly encouraged but not required, and all guests must wear a mask indoors. Feeling under the weather? Please NightLife another time!   • Last entry into the rainforest exhibit is 7:30 pm—our animals need their sleep.
     
  • Morrison Planetarium is now open at NightLife with 4 showtimes. To maximize staff and guest safety, planetarium passes are required and capacity is limited. Passes are available online in advance for an additional $5 while supplies last to reserve a seat at a 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, or 9:30 pm planetarium show. Please see our FAQs for more details. (Please note: A limited number of standby seats will be available for all showtimes as space allows on a first-come, first-served basis. Food and drink are not permitted inside the planetarium, and masks must be worn properly at all times.)
     
  • Food and beverages are available for purchase in the Academy Café and West Garden Terrace including a variety of grab-and-go options, craft cocktails, and more. All food and drink must be enjoyed outdoors.
