It’s complicated. Join us for a new volume of Virtual NightLife exploring the relationship between humans and nature and our impact on the environment—good and bad. Hosted by Dr. Nathalie Nagalingum, Curator of Botany, who will weave stories of our relationship to plants throughout the evening.

  • Take a closer look at Jak Wonderly’s winning photo from the BigPicture: Natural World Photography Competition in the Human/Nature category, an image showing 200 dead birds killed by household cats. As a joint project between the photographer and San Rafael’s WildCare organization, Wonderly and Melanie Piazza, Director of Animal Care, will talk about how they approached this striking photo, and how we can help reduce the death toll caused by our pets.
  • Learn more about the work of Jane Kim of Ink Dwell, a Bay Area studio that blends fine art and science illustration to create large-scale works that explore the wonder of the natural world. She’ll talk about the Migrating Murals project, part of an ongoing effort to increase awareness of wildlife migration corridors in urban environments. Their current focus is on monarch butterflies, having recently completed their newest mural in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.
  • Conservation photographer and National Geographic Explorer Gab Mejia shares photos and stories from his ongoing storytelling project about the Philippines’ Agusan Marshlands and the indigenous Manobo people.

  • You may think you’re alone when you stay at home, but you’re actually living with about 100 different animal species. Dr. Michelle Trautwein, Curator of Entomology, talks about the fascinating biodiversity that exists in our daily lives and what she's learned from looking for arthropods in homes across seven continents.

  • What’s a NightLife without music? Enjoy a short set by Bay Area rapper, spoken word artist, and music producer Ruby Ibarra.
