Teen Advocates for Science Communication (TASC)

TASC youth teaches about a Macaw

Teen Advocates for Science Communication (TASC) is a volunteer program that invites youth in grades 9-12 from across the Bay Area to lead interactive science experiences for Academy visitors and the general public. Trained by their peers and guided by experts in science and education, TASC volunteers learn to facilitate fun activities that deepen science understanding and inspire passion for nature conservation. In TASC, youth build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and develop lifelong friendships. The Leadership Design Team (LDT) is a group of highly motivated and experienced TASC volunteers who design TASC public floor experiences, lead activity trainings, and serve in additional leadership roles.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for TASC, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in 9th -12th grade
  • Commit to one program day per week
  • Have an interest in science and the natural world

How to Apply:

Applications are now open. The deadline to apply is January 3, 2020 at 11:59 PM. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a group interview to ensure a good fit and commitment to the program.

TASC MS

TASC MS youth at Ocean Beach

Designed for grades 6-8, TASC Middle School invites youth to make exciting scientific discoveries in and around Golden Gate Park. Through guided field trips and fun exhibit tours, youth in TASC MS investigate environmental issues, explore STEM careers, and contribute to citizen science research. Examples of past activities include a behind-the-scenes tour of Academy collections, monitoring Pacific mole crabs at Ocean Beach, fly fishing lessons at the Golden Gate casting ponds, and birding at Stow Lake.

Cost: $450 ($425 members)

The Academy is committed to expanding public access to high quality science and environmental learning experiences. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to families that require financial assistance.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the TASC MS, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in 6th - 8th grade
  • Be able to commit to eight Sundays, 12:00-3:00 PM, from February 9 to March 29, 2020
  • Have an interest in science and the natural world
  • Have transportation to and from the Academy and nearby areas
