Academy Update: How to Change the World
Thursday May 23 NightLife: 6:30 pm, 7:30 pm
Capacity limited, reservations required

We find ourselves immersed in a suite of global crises—what some now call a "polycrisis"—with emergencies spanning climate, social justice, and biodiversity. At such a pivotal, crazy moment, many of us are asking, "How can I make a difference?" In this presentation, Dr. Scott Sampson, executive director of the California Academy of Sciences, will argue that our greatest challenge is not "out there" in the world but within each of us. Today, the dominant worldview sees humans as outside and above nature, with the natural world reduced to resources for our exploitation. We must begin to embrace a different mindset, one that views the living world as brimming with relatives, and regards humans as inextricably embeded within nature as regenerative collaborators. In this presentation, you will learn about five core senses that each of us can (re)awaken to help make a difference in the journey ahead.

PLANETARIUM PASSES

  • Planetarium passes are required for the 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 pm shows.
  • Passes are $5 each and may be purchased online or at the ticket window. Since shows do sell out, we always recommend buying in advance.
  • Please arrive at the planetarium 15 minutes before your ticketed showtime for seating. We run a tight spaceship!
