March 2014′s Brilliant!Science: Incredible Ocean

The Academy presents Brilliant!Science, an incredible festival celebrating the nutrient–rich ecosystem of micro and macro marine life along California’s coast. Enjoy a wide range of programs, family activities, lectures and social events throughout March!

Here are some highlights:

  • Saturday, March 15 . 9:00am – 11:00am . Board Room
     
    Eye-Opening Science: The Changing Oceans
     
    In addition to the global climate change, one of the consequences of increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the concern that this gas will dissolve in the world’s oceans and create more acidic conditions. Organisms that produce a calcium carbonate skeleton are potentially highly vulnerable to this acidification. What is the current state of the world’s oceans? Currently, how serious a problem is ocean acidification?
     
  • Saturday, March 22 & Sunday, March, 23 . 10:00am – 4:00pm . Piazza
     
    Family Festival: Incredible Ocean
     
    Explore the Incredible Ocean through informative, interactive programs for the whole family. Learn about local efforts to preserve and nuture marine life, and join in for a special storytime.
     
  • Saturday, March 28 & Sunday, March 29 . Chrissy Field
     
    Bioblitz: Golden Gate National Parks
     
    During BioBlitz, teams of volunteer scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to find and identify as many species of plants, animals, microbes, fungi, and other organisms as possible The Academy is participating in this year’s BioBlitz effort which includes a biodiversity festival at Chrissy Field.
