April 5: Yerba Buena Island Bioblitz

Explore Yerba Buena Island and help document its biodiversity!

Join the San Francisco Department of the Environment, the Treasure Island Development Authority, and the California Academy of Sciences as we explore Yerba Buena Island and document its species.

One of San Francisco’s ecological treasures, Yerba Buena Island is home to an amazing diversity of native plants, birds, and more. We'll explore the beach and the upland areas, so come prepared to hike and get your feet wet.

What is a bioblitz?

A bioblitz is an intensive one-day study of biodiversity in a specific location, bringing professional scientists and amateur citizen scientists together. Together, we’ll look for snails, salamanders, birds, butterflies, other insects, spiders, trees, worms, flowers, and everything else we can find!

Who can participate?

People of all ages and skill levels are welcome, but the terrain is a bit treacherous and may be difficult for children under 10! You bring your curiosity, a smart phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded (or digital camera), and tons of enthusiasm. We’ll rally some experts and folks who know the area. Together we’ll make some science!
