Make Earth Day Every Day
Planet Earth is an incredibly unique place in our solar system. For one, it is the only planet that supports a diverse system of life! Earth has been able to support and take care of both plants and animals, including humans. So, how do we humans take care of Earth just like it takes care of us?
Livestream Date: Wednesday, April 22
Times: 12:30 pm PT (3:30 pm ET)
Duration: 45 minutes
Target Audience: 4th - 8th grade
In this live stream on YouTube and Facebook, students will take on the role of Planet Heroes as they build and reflect upon their own ideas about one of the biggest impacts on Earth’s ecosystems: feeding all humans. Throughout the program, students will be challenged to design simple, personal solutions for minimizing those impacts while meeting the needs of humans, plants, and other animals on our planet. Specific challenges that students will design solutions for involve changing food choices and reducing food waste. By the end of the program, they will create their own Planet Hero Action Plan to implement one of their solutions into their lives!
If possible prepare the following for each student so that they can participate with their own materials during the livestream!
- a pencil
- a Science Journal worksheet or science notebook
- a set of Food Cards printed double sided
Have you ever thrown away food after a meal? Have you ever thrown away a whole piece of food? What are some of the reasons you threw away that food?
During this Food Waste Audit lesson, students will identify where they are wasting food in their daily lives. Modifications can be made to the lesson plan for shorter activity time.
Our 2020-2021 Special Live Events schedule will be available in September.
