An evening with kelp forest restorers! Learn about ongoing efforts to give California’s iconic kelp forests a fighting chance against a plethora of challenges, from warming waters to marine disease. Stay tuned for: Kelp Forest 101, “zombie” sea urchins, hopeful comeback stories, plenty of adorable snail pics, and more. In order of appearance:

  • Dr. Kristen Elsmore, an ecologist and environmental scientist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, will give an overview of the state of California's kelp forests.
     
  • Tristin McHugh, a sub-tidal ecologist and kelp forest restoration practitioner from The Nature Conservancy, will share about The Nature Conservancy’s ongoing kelp restoration efforts, including sea urchin trapping and more.
     
  • Michael Esgro, marine ecologist and senior scientist with the California Ocean Protection Council, will cover state-wide efforts and the following policy implications around kelp forest restoration projects.
     
  • Dr. Alyssa Frederick, postdoctoral scholar with the UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab, will talk about an ongoing project racing to save endangered white abalone along the California coast.

All NightSchool virtual programming is intended for audiences 21+.
