Join us Thursday, November 16, at 7pm PT for a free NightSchool livestream!

Is it hot in here, or is it just the solar coronas and volcanoes being born? We’re bringing together experts for a sizzling night all about heat — but put the aloe down, our passions for science will be the only things burning.

• Crystal Cortez: Earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains — the Pacific Plate (aka the largest tectonic plate in the world) truly does it all. Academy Geology Collections Manager Crystal Cortez will share about how the Earth’s many tectonic plates interact with one another to create the environments we know today, and about a key factor that makes the Pacific Plate particularly special: the Ring of Fire.

• Ryan Wyatt: What is heat, really? Ryan Wyatt, the Academy’s Senior Director of the Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization, walks us through how we define and detect heat in the frigid vacuum of space — even from light years away. We’ll explore heat within and outside of our own solar system in planets, stars, and more.

All NightSchool virtual programming is intended for audiences 21+.
